»LINKING – Collage as a method«

Thematic group exhibition
–> SEITE IN DEUTSCH

The collage method as a model for social processes?
Against the backdrop of the expanding diversity and quantity of information, possibilities, materials and cultures that collide in a single moment, the artists' association Walkmühle uses LINKING to investigate the extent to which the collage method is suitable as a model for dealing with social processes.
In collage, artists combine heterogeneous material from a wide variety of contexts to create a coherent whole. Can this artistic expertise support processes that concern the coexistence of different cultures in a shared environment? After all, the integration of the foreign, the disparate, the seemingly unrelated is at the heart of collage.

Consequently, the team of curators led by Stefanie Kettel, Verena Schmidt and Axel Schweppe applied the collage method directly to the organisational form of the exhibition project: They agreed to use one of the Walkmühle's three exhibition spaces for each of the different artistic focal points and not only to become artistically active in each of them, but also to invite fellow artists to collaborate and work together on a common body of work.
In this way, each room not only becomes a collage itself – in their interplay, they ultimately form something like a ‘collage on the subject of collage’, in which even the visitors can participate interactively and collage-like.

Room 1

»Layered Stories – Visual Constructions of Thinking«

Curated by Stefanie Kettel. With works by Billa Burger, Stefanie Kettel, Wiebke Kirchner and Dieter Schwer.

In a world that is reassembled every day – from media images, identities, opinions and power relations – collage is more than just an artistic medium. It is a mirror and a commentary.
The first exhibition space, curated by Stefanie Kettel, shows works in which image fragments, scraps of text and visual breaks negotiate social realities. What remains when you peel away the surface? What new stories are told when old ones are superimposed and combined?
The exhibition in this room invites you to take a closer look: At what makes a picture out of individual parts and at what lies beneath. The works range from classic paper collages to photographic and painterly compositions to filmic, sculptural and lyrical forms.
The result is a multi-layered dialogue between tradition and the present, materiality and virtuality, surface and space – and not least between human handwriting and algorithmic intelligence.

»Inside the Glass Hole«

Curated by Verena Schmidt. With works by Solweig de Barry, Lou Hoyer, Fee Kleiß and Verena Schmidt.

The four artists in the second room understand the principle of collage as a collective process in which their individual works and techniques merge into a spatial concept through collaborative collaging, blurring the boundaries of the individual. The result is an undefined space of the in-between, in which new levels come to the fore.
The artists drew inspiration for the title and process from the worlds of Lewis Carroll's books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. In these worlds, a cat can disappear and its grin remains floating in the collaged space.
In the second exhibition room, however, visitors do not enter a wonderland but a collaged, constructed illusion: sculptural fragments, floating assemblages and painterly breaks virtually invite visitors to leave the Platonic cave and abandon all rules - because Inside the Glass Hole opens up a world of new logic in which the spirit of bizarre chaos reigns, proportions are derailed and gravity can no longer be relied upon.

Room 3

»linking sound«

Kuratiert von Axel Schweppe. Mit Cornelius Hummel, Axel Schweppe und weiteren Gästen.

The sound collage »linking sound« conceived by Axel Schweppe in the third room refers to the works in the other two exhibition rooms. For this listening room, Axel Schweppe, Cornelius Hummel and other participating guests photographically record fragments of the exhibited artworks, interpret them sonically and collage them into a composition. This transformation from the visual to the sonic level combines the works in a new context that can be experienced through hearing. Visible collages become audible collages.
