Swaantje Güntzel has been dealing with the ecological problem of plastic in our environment in her work for many years. The portrait of her assistant Joana follows in its pictorial structure the Dutch portrait painting of the 17th century. The only irritating thing is that the beautiful woman appears to be vomiting, and the traces of vomit on her chest and stomach are interspersed with pieces of plastic. In fact, these are plastic pieces found in the stomachs of dead albatross chicks. The young birds starve to death because of the indigestible plastic that their parents - thinking it is food - feed them. Güntzel has put another set of small plastic toys that have killed Laysan albatrosses in the Pacific Ocean into a chewing gum machine.
In her latest work, Swaantje Güntzel collects old postcards depicting glaciers. These old documents show the extent, size and splendour of the ice tongues, which are rapidly disappearing today. Accordingly, she cuts out the ice tongues from the historical images and now presents the glaciers as a missing part, a hole in the paper, while collecting the cut-out glaciers in a "shaking picture".
